STARFISH Values Program
It's been said that “teaching kids to count isn't nearly as important as teaching them what counts.” Camp offers the perfect environment to teach children important life lessons that the traditional academic environment just isn't designed to handle. Under the careful guidance of trained camp professionals, children can learn and practice social skills at a level not offered in school.
While parents are the primary source of values education and character building, the job has been getting harder as affluent lifestyles blur the lines of what really is and is not important. Camp offers an opportunity to reinforce what children are already learning at home. Moreover, in the recreational setting that includes competitive sports, performing arts, and day-to-day bunk living with nine or ten peers and college-age counselors, children have a unique opportunity to learn, practice and test their values skills.
Every Friday evening we gather as a full camp at our lakeside outdoor “CAMPitheatre” for our STARFISH ceremony. Campers volunteer each week to share their experiences and thoughts on that week’s value, including how Tyler Hill has impacted their lives. We then sing traditional camp songs and our Head Counselors give out weekly camper STARFISH awards. If you ask any current camper at Tyler Hill, he or she will tell you that the STARFISH award is extremely meaningful, and that our STARFISH program helps to define summers at THC.
