Thankful for our THC Family!

With Turkey Day only a few days away, we are so very thankful that you and your family are a part of our THC Family.  If you think about it, family reunions at Thanksgiving are very similar to our own camp reunions!  It’s a way to come together and reconnect – to keep in touch and maintain that bond that we have with each other.  We get to see old friends and meet new ones while spending quality time over food and fun activities, catching up on the latest news since we last saw each other!

While you prep for the long weekend, don’t forget to mark you calendars for our next reunion – Saturday, December 3, 2011!  Login to your CampInTouch Account HERE, go to Forms & Documents and fill out the Bowling Reunion RSVP.  We can’t wait to see you on that special “holiday”!

From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Covers Cause We Care – Campers Donate Camp Bedding

This summer Tyler Hill will be joining their sister camps Timber Lake West and Timber Lake Camp in a blanket drive collecting gently used bedding from campers.

Carly (on the right) a Timber Lake West camper, and her friend from home Rachel (on the left) started a charity called “Covers Cause We Care.” The idea started when they noticed that many of their camp friends would bring their own personal bedding to camp and after a few summers, many would replace their bedding once camp was over.  They learned that there are many children in their home communities on Long Island who do not have a blanket to keep them warm at night, and so they started collecting the gently used camp bedding at the end of the summer and gave it to people who desperately needed it – and so, Covers Cause We Care was born!

Carly & Rachel said “We are two girls who want to help other kids and their families stay warm in the winter months. We are so lucky to have blankets on our beds, but we know that this is not the case for everyone. In the last two years we have collected and donated over 700 blankets to the amazing people at the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). They are the largest private social service agency on Long Island. They run 19 soup kitchens, emergency shelters and a long term housing program to help people in need all over Long Island. They are so grateful for these blankets and we are so happy to have found a way to help others in the community.”

Tyler Hill is proud to support such a worthy program and is looking forward to participating in it this summer.  This is just another example of how creative and sensitive campers can be and how this exemplifies what we practice here at Tyler Hill with our STARFISH values program.  If you have any blankets that you’d like to donate, you can email Covers Cause We Care at jbepc10@aol.com.  Kudos to Carly and Rachel!

5 Questions for Camper: Charlie

Hi! My name is Charlie! I’m 9 years old, in the 4th grade and I live in Harrison, New York. I’ve been going to Tyler Hill for 2 summers and I love it there! I have an 11 year old brother, I play flag-football and I also love playing with dogs.

1) What is the number #1 thing you love most about camp?
The number 1 thing that I love most about camp is the Lower Camp Bowl which is essentially flag-football.  I LOVE it!

2) What was the funniest thing that happened to you at camp?
The funniest thing that happened was this past summer, and I guess it probably falls into the category of where “You just had to be there”… My friend was pretending to be like Spiderman hopping around all over the place like a frog. Me and my friends were laughing so hard where we just couldn’t stop because one of our other friends was being so ridiculously goofy.

3) What is your favorite memory from last summer?
Being able to play in the Lower Camp Flag Football Bowl. I was QB!!! And I can’t wait to bring my skills to the older campers when I get to actually pay in the Lazurus Bowl.

4) Describe camp using only 3 words:
I LOVE CAMP!

5) What are you most looking forward to doing this summer?
Being a Cadet and meeting new friends.

5 Questions for Camper: Caroline

My name is Caroline (I’m the one on the right!) and I’m 15 years old. There is nothing I like to do more than to brag about my favorite place in the entire world – Tyler Hill Camp!  I live in New York City and I go to Fieldston High School. My favorite activities are hanging out with my friends and having a good time!  My favorite sports are softball and basketball and I like to sing and dance too.

I have been going to Tyler Hill for 8 years and it has truly shaped me into the person I am today and I don’t know where I would be without it.  Going to Tyler Hill was the best decision my family and I have ever made and I am so excited to return as a 9th year camper next summer and continue to grow with my Tyler Hill family.

1) What is the number #1 thing you love most about camp?
I really don’t think it’s possible for me to narrow my list of things I love about camp to only one thing!  However, the things I love most about camp are the everlasting friendships and unforgettable memories I have made at Tyler Hill.

2) What was the funniest thing that happened to you at camp?
The funniest thing that has happened at camp actually occurred this past summer. My division (Teen Girls) had to dress up like the contestants on the show “Toddlers and Tiaras” for our divisional sing theme. We wore the most ridiculous clothes and even more ridiculous make up. Everyone in the camp was staring at us! It was so funny! We had such a great time doing it!

3) What is your favorite memory from last summer?
My favorite memory from last summer was on the last night of camp. My whole division stayed up the whole night and we watched the sunrise together. We reminisced about past summers and all of our favorite times at camp.

4) Describe camp using only 3 words:
Friendship — Perfection — Family

5) What are you most looking forward to doing this summer?
I am going to be in the oldest division this coming summer!  Yay!  And I know my division will really step-up and lead the camp. I am especially excited to work with the younger campers because they are so much fun and they remind me of who I was back in 2004 when I first started at camp.  Lead by example!

Indian Summer 2011

This past weekend our Tyler Hill 10th and 11th grade campers spent the weekend at camp with us for our annual “Indian Summer” weekend.  Although rain was forecasted, the sun was shining all weekend long as we gathered with our campers to reminisce about this past summer, plan ahead for Summer 2012 and just hang out and enjoy each other’s company!

Flag football, a roaring campfire, delicious meals and being surrounded by our summer family were the centerpieces to the weekend.  It was so great to have just one more weekend together after the summer season ended.  We were thrilled to see and to be with all of our old friends — but sad (again!) to say good-bye…

Now the countdown truly begins until the summer of 2012.  Check out these photos of our awesome weekend taken by none other than one of our campers and Indian Summer participant, Jordyn!!!  Thank you Jordyn for taking such FABULOUS photos!!!

Camp POWER!

Camp POWER, a program through the Country Roads Foundation, is a one-week, fully funded, overnight camp experience for 150 kids from East New York and Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Driven by a volunteer staff, coming from far and wide, Camp POWER this year will take place at Tyler Hill Camp once our summer season has ended.

Slade Sohmer, a former Tyler Hill camper & Counselor (from age 7 yrs – 22 yrs) became involved with Camp Power last year.  According to Slade “It was an amazing week. I was a bunk counselor as well as the head judge and Olympics coordinator. After the session ended last summer, I introduced Scot (from Camp POWER) to Andy and Wendy, and the deal was made to bring POWER to THC. What better way to exemplify Tyler Hill’s STARFISH values?  I will be there this summer and I honestly just can’t wait!”

Camp POWER campers are not only given a week away from their turbulent neighborhoods, but more importantly, they learn about themselves, their counselors’ different backgrounds and the world outside their neighborhoods they don’t see very often.

Through our STARFISH Values Program we teach our THC campers that each individual can make a difference. Hosting Camp POWER this summer and other events throughout the year just like this, shows our campers that when each person does his or her part, together the impact is amazing!

Visiting Day – Summer 2011

On a scale of 1-10, our Visiting Day was a 12!  We could not have ordered better weather if we tried!

Everyone was so excited! Parents were running down the hill towards their children who were anxiously waiting!!!  Hugs and kisses were happening all over as our campers couldn’t wait to share all their wonderful camp experiences with their families.

Parents met their child’s counselors, friends and were able to see and do the things their child enjoys doing most at camp.  Some campers and their families choose to just hang-out on the lawn and talk all day while others water-skiied, swam, went boating or played tennis.  This is one of our favorite days of the summer!

Everyone was very happy with the day and especially with our top-notch staff.  Rave reviews about the day were echoed as Visiting Day came to a close and we ended the day with our traditional super-soaker water fight throughout camp…  As many campers have said over and over again to their parents “Thank you for sending me to Tyler Hill!!!  This is the best summer I’ve ever had!”

Rookie Day at Tyler Hill

We had a fantastic day with our ‘Rookies’ last week! We had a group of prospective Tyler Hill’ers join us for a day of fun, friendship and excitement.

Rookie Day is a one day program where we invite prospective campers to participate with other prospective and current campers in a typical day at camp. Parents start the day with their children. Then, as the children go off with their counselors and new friends for a power packed day of activities, parents get a complete tour of Camp, get to meet our staff and speak with the Directors Wendy and Andy. After that, it’s time for Parents to have some fun! Enjoy local sites, engage in some of the area’s activities and have lunch in town on us! They return later in the afternoon to pick up their “camper”, who we hope will be our future Tyler Hill Camper!

We have another Rookie Day right around the corner on Saturday, July 30th – Give us a call at (570) 224-4131 to register and join us for a day full of fun!  Check out the video below from one of our Rookie Days from last summer and see what Tyler Hill is all about!
