Camp POWER!

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Camp POWER, a program through the Country Roads Foundation, is a one-week, fully funded, overnight camp experience for 150 kids from East New York and Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Driven by a volunteer staff, coming from far and wide, Camp POWER this year will take place at Tyler Hill Camp once our summer season has ended.

Slade Sohmer, a former Tyler Hill camper & Counselor (from age 7 yrs – 22 yrs) became involved with Camp Power last year.  According to Slade “It was an amazing week. I was a bunk counselor as well as the head judge and Olympics coordinator. After the session ended last summer, I introduced Scot (from Camp POWER) to Andy and Wendy, and the deal was made to bring POWER to THC. What better way to exemplify Tyler Hill’s STARFISH values?  I will be there this summer and I honestly just can’t wait!”

Camp POWER campers are not only given a week away from their turbulent neighborhoods, but more importantly, they learn about themselves, their counselors’ different backgrounds and the world outside their neighborhoods they don’t see very often.

Through our STARFISH Values Program we teach our THC campers that each individual can make a difference. Hosting Camp POWER this summer and other events throughout the year just like this, shows our campers that when each person does his or her part, together the impact is amazing!

Test Drive Camp At One Of Our Rookie Days!

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Selecting the right camp for your child is both important and impactful. Camp is, for most people, an experience that can last for six or more years (with memories that last for many decades after!)  At THC, we know that such a big decision shouldn’t be made lightly, so we’ve specifically designed our Rookie Day Program to allow your child an opportunity to “taste” the sleep away camp experience, while giving you, as parents, a close-up look at our facilities, program, supervision and philosophy.  Oh, and all the fun too :) (more…)

Timber Lake Family of Camps: Adopt-A-Family

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

For the fourth year in a row, the Timber Lake Family of Camps has joined together for the holidays to make a difference in the greater Glen Cove community. Our winter office staff has again “adopted” several local families and has spent the past few weeks shopping to fulfill each family member’s Christmas list. From socks and shoes to games, toys, books and winter coats, we’ve bought and wrapped it all! The gifts will be delivered (by a fully suited TLC Santa Claus) just in time for Christmas!

An extra thanks goes out to the many families from North Shore Day School that donated toys, gifts and clothes, and also to our camp families who so generously participated: Jason Littman & the Littman Family kindly donated rolls and rolls of wrapping paper; Michele and Steven Koss generously donated designer perfumes for the moms and older girls in each family; Michele and Evan Cagner donated dozens of pairs of shoes and boots.

And another special thank you to the team behind FUSHIGI balls, who sent us these incredibly cool Fushigi balls that were at the top of every child’s list.

For the past six years we have hosted the Lazarus Bowl flag football tournament for football teams from other camps in Wayne County. These teams duke it out on the football field all day long while our campers watch the games! Every one in camp attends the final game of the tournament, which takes place during evening activity.  Tyler Hill has had the good fortune of winning every Lazarus Bowl tournament in its history! Tyler Hill is full of Olympic spirit!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Cheerios, Cocoa Puffs, Scrambled Eggs… and Olympics??? That’s right – just as all of camp was taking their last bites of cereal and sips of hot chocolate at breakfast, a band of counselors on the drums, keyboard, and microphone rolled up to the dining hall doors on the hayrider and started JAMMIN’ to some Beatles and Rolling Stones songs! (Let’s just say that if there were any campers that weren’t really awake, they certainly were at that moment!) (more…)
