Hi everybody!  My name is Jessica Hutchinson (I’m the Zebra – Yes, just another typical day at Tyler Hill!) but I’m known around camp simply as “Hutch.”  I’m 23 years old and from Halifax, which is in Nova Scotia, Canada!  I first came to camp back in 2008 on a complete whim.  My cousin had worked at THC the summer before as a basketball specialist and loved it.  She came home raving about her experiences and said that it was something I just absolutely had to to — she knew it was right up my alley.  I got in contact with Andy and came to camp my first summer as a general counselor.

Camp was THE most amazing experience of my life… I couldnt believe that in one short summer, a place like Tyler Hill could become my second home!  The next summer I convinced my best friend to come back with me, and the rest is history!  Camp truly is a place that I love and call home — just like all of my campers, I count down the days every year until I get to go back.

THC Brings Holiday Cheer to Many Deserving Children

December 21st, 2011. Posted by THC Insider.

This holiday season, the TLC Family of Camps have come together to help out families in need with the Boys and Girls Club of Glen Cove by collecting toys and other small gifts for their Club Bucks program.

During the holiday season, the Club Bucks program is offered to the club’s children as an incentive program. Here, they earn “Club Bucks” for completing various tasks and doing good deeds, such as helping a staff person, getting an A on a test, doing all their homework, helping another friend, participate in an educational activity, etc.  At the end of the program, each child has the opportunity to “shop” in the Holiday Store to purchase gifts and toys for their siblings or other family members.  Some of the items collected were: stuffed animals, bracelets, gloves, socks, t-shirts and various children’s toys. The goal of the program is to convey the importance of “giving” during this holiday season – giving of their time, effort and service – and giving of gifts to loved ones.

Our day school, North Shore Day School, also led a food drive to help support LI Cares, a hunger action organization which distributed the canned goods we collected to local shelters and families in need.

Tyler Hill is proud to support the Boys and Girls Club & LI Cares during this season of giving and everyone here at camp wishes you a wonderful holiday and a very happy New Year!

Bringing Camp Energy to Local School

December 14th, 2011. Posted by THC Insider.

The TLC Family of Camps have been proud participants of the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island for the past 5 years.  Dedicated to our camp organization’s mission of building self-esteem and self-confidence, more than 15 members of our full-time team travel to the Gribben Elementary School in Glen Cove twice a month to run programs for “at-risk” children.

This past week, students got to make a holiday garland of wishes, where they got to write their wishes for the New Year on snowflakes, candy canes and gingerbread men.  Whether it’s teaching a cooking class,  running team-building games, or just spending quality one-on-one time with the ‘mentees’, every mentoring program is intentionally designed to inject some “camp” energy into our local elementary school.

Spotlight on Staff: Meech

Hello Tyler Hill readers!  My name is Demetrius Eaton, but everyone at camp knows me as “Meech!”  I’m 27 years old and during the Winter months I live in Europe.

I found my way to Tyler Hill through a mutual friend who was also working at camp.  She had been with Tyler Hill for 2 years and knew I’d fit right in!  I was a general counselor and my basic responsibilities were to be with my campers, make sure they arrived to their activities, encourage and foster friendships with one another, and act as an all-around role model.

When I’m not in Camp I am most likely in Europe playing American Football. This past summer prior to arriving at camp, I earned my second Gold medal for Team USA after winning the IFAF World Cup 2011!

Some of my personal hobbies include composing music.  I compose all types of music – everything from short basic jingles to full-on songs.  I love drawing, working out, singing and rapping, and traveling!  I guess you could say I’m an all around creative type of guy!

What strikes a chord in me about Tyler Hill is the atmosphere and culture.  From morning reveille to color war and everything else in between, this place is family.  I loved just being around the kids….  It made ME feel like a kid again and I loved that feeling of being a role model for them.

The entire Tyler Hill community is like one big family.  This past summer was fantastic and I am grateful to have met the best group of kids across the nation. Until next time… (singing) “Tyler Hill, is people, meeting people, meeting people. If you feel it in your spirit, set it free!”

Thankful for our THC Family!

With Turkey Day only a few days away, we are so very thankful that you and your family are a part of our THC Family.  If you think about it, family reunions at Thanksgiving are very similar to our own camp reunions!  It’s a way to come together and reconnect – to keep in touch and maintain that bond that we have with each other.  We get to see old friends and meet new ones while spending quality time over food and fun activities, catching up on the latest news since we last saw each other!

While you prep for the long weekend, don’t forget to mark you calendars for our next reunion – Saturday, December 3, 2011!  Login to your CampInTouch Account HERE, go to Forms & Documents and fill out the Bowling Reunion RSVP.  We can’t wait to see you on that special “holiday”!

From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Covers Cause We Care – Campers Donate Camp Bedding

November 14th, 2011. Posted by THC Insider.

This summer Tyler Hill will be joining their sister camps Timber Lake West and Timber Lake Camp in a blanket drive collecting gently used bedding from campers.

Carly (on the right) a Timber Lake West camper, and her friend from home Rachel (on the left) started a charity called “Covers Cause We Care.” The idea started when they noticed that many of their camp friends would bring their own personal bedding to camp and after a few summers, many would replace their bedding once camp was over.  They learned that there are many children in their home communities on Long Island who do not have a blanket to keep them warm at night, and so they started collecting the gently used camp bedding at the end of the summer and gave it to people who desperately needed it – and so, Covers Cause We Care was born!

Carly & Rachel said “We are two girls who want to help other kids and their families stay warm in the winter months. We are so lucky to have blankets on our beds, but we know that this is not the case for everyone. In the last two years we have collected and donated over 700 blankets to the amazing people at the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). They are the largest private social service agency on Long Island. They run 19 soup kitchens, emergency shelters and a long term housing program to help people in need all over Long Island. They are so grateful for these blankets and we are so happy to have found a way to help others in the community.”

Tyler Hill is proud to support such a worthy program and is looking forward to participating in it this summer.  This is just another example of how creative and sensitive campers can be and how this exemplifies what we practice here at Tyler Hill with our STARFISH values program.  If you have any blankets that you’d like to donate, you can email Covers Cause We Care at jbepc10@aol.com.  Kudos to Carly and Rachel!
